About Us

In the spring of 1962, the Oklahoma District LCMS moved to establish a mission in Edmond, Oklahoma, for the purpose of serving campus and community. In August, 1962 the first worship service was held in the American Legion Hut with 72 persons attending. The name “Peace Lutheran Church” was chosen in December 1962 and worship was held in the old Presbyterian Church. Property was purchased in 1964 and in July 1965 a new church at 400 N. Chowning was dedicated.

Building additions included new offices and several classrooms in 1969, and a balcony in 1971. Early in our second decade two services were begun. Outreach in campus and community continued and our building was made available for various community needs. (This policy has continued to this day.) The congregation has always been ecumenically inclined and has participated in many education, worship and service areas with other congregations and denominations. Peace has usually had lay members represented in various synodical functions and offices. A somewhat mobile congregation, the membership continued to spiral to nearly 700 in 1978 before leveling off to 600 in 1986.

In October 1979, Peace resigned from the LCMS after four years of being in a “public state of protest” concerning LCMS administration practices. A small number of families left Peace to begin St. Mark’s LCMS in Edmond. In January 1980, the congregation voted to join the American Lutheran Church, then later affiliated with the current ELCA when it was formed

On land purchased in 1976 the present worship facility was constructed at 2600 E. Danforth and was dedicated November of 1984. The Education wing was added in 1993 to accommodate a growing membership, currently over 1000 folks. Additional property for future development was purchased in 1999 and 2001.

Additional staff as needed over the years have included Director of Music, Director of Christian Education, Youth Director, a Deaconess who served as Minister of Youth and Education, and more recently Director of Children’s Ministries and Assistant, Director of Lay Ministries, Secretary to the pastor, Parish Secretary, two part time secretaries, Assistant Director of Music,, Nursery Supervisor, Assistant Director of Youth, Organist, and Director of Preschool (which started in 1975). The Church Council includes 13 Councilors plus a youth representative.
